Study: Marijuana use in teens could worsen depression - WKYC-TV

Washington, D.C. -- Teens looking to relieve depression with marihuana and other drugs may be making their state of affairs worse.

According to a survey by the Office of National Drug Control Policy, marihuana usage can not only do depression worse, but can also take to more than serious mental disorders, such as as schizophrenic disorder and anxiety.The ONDCP survey shows that some teens utilize illegal drugs to "self-medicate" their feelings and symptoms of depression. About two million teens reported feeling depressed at some point during 2007, and these teens are almost twice as likely to have got used illicit drugs than their non-depressed peers. They are also more than than twice as likely to mistreat or go dependent on marijuana, a drug associated with depression and suidical ideas and actions. Teens who smoke marihuana just once a calendar month are three modern times more likely to have got self-destructive ideas than non-smokers. "Marijuana is not the answer. Too many immature people are making a bad state of affairs worse by using marihuana in a ill-conceived attempt to alleviate their symptoms of depression," said Toilet P. Walters, Director of the ONDCP.The effectiveness of marihuana have increased over the years, Bruno Walter explains, translating into serious wellness effects for immature smokers.
